Charles Earl Slagg
Charles Earl Slagg, 89, passed away peacefully at home with his loving family by his side.

Charles was born April 29, 1920 in Garrison, ND to Earl and Sarah Slagg. He was preceded in death by his wife, Viola; parents; and sisters, Lilla Richardson, Nette Eglet, Hallie Manning and one grandson, Jason, as an infant.

Charles and Viola Slagg were married December 26, 1943 and lived all of their married life in the Zillah area.

Charles served in the military during World War II for "three years, nine months, and 18 days" as he would say. He was very proud of his service to our country and received the Medal of Victory and a Good Conduct Medal. He reached the rank of Staff Sergeant as a cook on a harbor craft in Alaska.

Charles loved his wife and family above all else. He was known as "Grandpa"or "Uncle" to many kids. His greatest joy was watching kids athletic events. He raised hundreds of pigs for many 4H and FFA kids. His weaner pigs, 30-50 at a time were picked by kids all over the state. His famous saying was, "These are all good pigs, you can make them Grand Champions." Many pigs placed at the top and some became Grand Champions. He enjoyed mentoring and watching the kids show his pigs. Mom and Dad would travel to many shows to watch kids show livestock. Charles also enjoyed dressing up as Santa Claus at Christmas and entertaining youngsters. He truly loved kids and they were a joy in his life.

Charles is survived by his loving sons, Gary (Carmen) Slagg of Tieton, WA and Ron (Gena) Slagg of Yakima, WA; six grandchildren, Roni Kim (Joe) Tobin, Sarah Slagg, Cody (Erin) Slagg, Jessica (Tim) Valdez, Amanda Slagg and Hannah Slagg; stepdaughters, Tabitha Tucker and Lisa (Dan) Holeton; and nine great grandchildren, Jacee Jo, Karli Kim Tobin, new addition Levi Charles Slagg, Bobby, Khaylie, Braiden, and Wyatt Holeton, Chase and Gage Tucker, and Jamie Tucker; special friends and many nieces, nephews and thousands of friends.

A special thanks to Joe, Ronni, Jacee, and Karli Tobin, Gena "Sarge" Slagg, and Lower Valley Hospice, especially Carla.

Memorials can be made to the Toppenish Junior Livestock and the West Valley Fair.

Visitation will be held on Thursday Oct. 29, 2009 from 10-5pm at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00am Friday, Oct. 30, 2009 at the Zillah Nazarene Church. So very sorry for your loss. Our prayers are with you. Jon & Joyce Nelson
Please accept our deepest sympathies for the loss of your dear father/grandfather. "Mr. Slagg" was a dear man and a fine gentleman. He helped our son Caleb w/his 4-H pig growing operation, even volunteering his time to show a very timid 12 year the fine art of castration!(We will never forget the look on our son's face, as your dad handed him the knife!!) Caleb will always remember him as one of those leader-role models that are just too rare today. We will treasure those memories as well! God Bless your family!
Respectfully
Rod and Carol Eshleman
My heart goes out to you all during this painful time of loss. Grandpa Slagg was a truly amazing man. He was a generous , loving man who would do anything for his family and loved ones. I remember as a kid showing animals out at the WV fair and both grandma and grandpa slagg were like the "the whole fairgrounds grandparents." Everyone loved them. I remember helping out one of my best friends in the pig barns on year and seeing his face light up with the biggest smile you could ever imagine and I turned to look and see what it was he was so happy about ..and it was grandma and grandpa holding hands walking their way through the barns headed to see their precious grandson show his pig. When I first met grandpa chuck, out at the farms I knew that he was an all around good ole' boy. He didnt really know me at all yet..but he jumped right in and helped me out with my stubborn cow when she was throwing a temper tantrum. Over the years I have grown closer !
with this special family and have witnessed first hand the love that they all had for their grandpa and the loved he had for them. He loved his family. There are many qualities that grandpa had that will never be forgotten. Infact, he passed them on down to his family. Just look at his incredible family and you will see the characteristics and qualities of grandpa chuck. He leaves behind a legacy of his life here on earth through his family. God bless you Slagg family. You are all in my prayers.
