Mary Margaret Shields passed away October 30, 2011 at Toppenish Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where she had lived since 1984 due to illness. She was born April 2, 1919 and was the second of six children born to John William and Mary Rosalie Shields in Mohler, Washington and was raised in Sunnyside, Brownstown and Toppenish.
Mary enjoyed birds, flowers, camping in the mountains and anything pretty. She loved the ocean and music. She was a member of St. Aloysious Catholic Church in Toppenish and looked forward to the services offered every Friday by the Eucharistic Ministry for Shut-ins and Nursing Homes.
Mary is survived by sisters, Katherine (Wayne) Oswalt of Zillah and Theresa (Willard) Boyle of Brownstown; brothers, James (Mary) Shields of Yakima and Charles (Dolores) Shields of Wapato; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother John and his wife Evelyn Shields and a nephew, John David Shields.
In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Toppenish St. Aloysious Catholic Church Eucharistic Ministry for Shut-ins and Nursing Homes.
Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 9:30 A.M. and Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, November 3, 2011 at St. Aloysious Catholic Church in Toppenish. I can't remember ever seeing Aunt Mary without a smile on her face. I remember how Dad used to tease her by calling her "Mook"... I don't know where he got that name for her, but she always played along. I want to thank Aunt Katie for taking such good care of Aunt Mary over the years. Mary was a happy person and much of that happiness came from the loving care Aunt Katie provided.
