Marvin Miner
Marvin Miner of Zillah, WA passed away with his family by his side on Sunday, November 6, 2011, after a four-year struggle with T-Cell Lymphoma. He was born June 1, 1944 to Norman and Marjorie Miner in Holyoke, Colorado. Marvin graduated from Wapato High School in 1962 and received his Associate’s Degree from YVCC, a Bachelor’s Degree from Central Washington University and his Master’s Degree from Tulane University. Marvin married Sherie Reno, his high school sweetheart, in White Salmon, Washington on June 18, 1966. They were later blessed with four children and seven grandchildren.

A very gifted educator, Marvin began his teaching career at Morgan Jr. High School in Ellensburg. After moving back to the Yakima Valley, he taught at Zillah High School, Zillah Elementary School, Toppenish Jr. High, Toppenish High School and, after retirement, at Heritage University. Inspiring his students while teaching math, computers, Driver’s Ed and MESA brought Marvin much joy. He also created the hanging flower baskets in Toppenish and most recently served as the Executive Director of CRISP insurance services.

Marvin accepted Jesus as his personal Savior as a teenager. He was a very active member of and served in numerous roles at Calvary Baptist Church in Toppenish for 40 years and most recently attended Buena Baptist Church. Marvin especially enjoyed deer hunting in Goldendale, Pepsi, M&M’s, westerns, music, autumn leaves, fair food, sharing stories, teaching others, and working on do-it-yourself projects.

He is survived by his wife, Sherie; daughter Brenda (Stephen) Rawlins-Rountree in Seattle, WA; son Todd (Jennifer) Miner in Yakima, WA (kids – Collin and Makenna); daughters, Tawnda (Barry) Brown in Lynden, WA (kids – Elijah and Jude); and Trinda (Jade) East in Zillah, WA (kids – Jaden, Whitney and Ethan); his mother, Marjorie Miner in Wapato, WA; his mother and father-in-law, Ima Jean and Mel Evans in Zillah, WA; three sisters, Barbara Miner, Shirley (Michael) Herrud, Rhonda (Mike) Fosburg; brother-in-law, Steve (Debbie) Reno and numerous nieces and nephews. Marvin was preceded in death by his beloved father, Norman Miner.

Marvin touched the lives of many, for which we will always be grateful. We are all the beneficiaries of the man he was and the way he guided so many people through life. His strength, humor, integrity, laughter, outstanding stories and dedication to God, his friends and community will be missed tremendously. His greatest love was that of his family. He was very involved in everything that was important to his wife, children and grandchildren and memories of those special times will continue to live in our hearts and minds forever.

Visitation will be 9-12 on Thursday, November 10, 2011 at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah with a private family graveside service at the Zillah City Cemetery on Thursday. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, November 11th at Toppenish High School. A reception featuring Marvin’s favorite desserts will follow the service at the same location. Valley Hills Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements. Online condolences can be left at www.valleyhillsfh.com.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made at https://nc.memfound.org, designated to the “Cottage in the Meadow Building Fund” for Hospice in Yakima.

I had the opportunity to take a couple of math classes from Marvin at Heritage. He was a wonderful teacher and had a lot of passion for math! He will be missed, but not forgotten.
Thank you Marvin for making math so enjoyable.

Marv was a great inspiration to all the students we had in the MESA program at Toppenish High School As the MESA Center Director I found him to be supportive, knowledgable, and inspiring. We had great fun together with the other MESA teachers from Pasco, Wapato, and Yakima on our joint venture. I am so sorry to hear of his passing and extend my deepest condolences to those of you closest to him.
Sincerely, Jo Anne (Weyrick) Robinson
My thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Miner's friends and family. As a former student of his at Toppenish high school and a teacher now myself I often think back to those days in geometry or math analysis and smile. He had the kindest of hearts, the gentlest of ways and a love of what he did that made you love it to. He is truly an inspiration. He is also one of the bravest men I have known thinking of the number of us he taught to drive. All who knew him are better for it. The heavens seem a little brighter tonight knowing he is a part of them.
My love to all, Shannon Lacey (formerly Clark)
The guy who first introduced me to computers in junior high and gave me an X one quarter despite doing all the homework because I didn't show my work (2x=4, x=?). His years of school service were greatly appreciated. My condolences to his family... and Hi Brenda! Goodbye, Mr. Miner. --Brian Hammack
My regards to Marvin's family and friends.

My deepest sympathies to the Miner family. Mr. Miner was a wonderful individual and educator and I am grateful to have known him. He was one of my greatest advocates in pursuing a college education. He went above and beyond in helping me obtain my first internship where I now work as a researcher. Thank you Mr. Miner for believing in me and encouraging me. You are truly one of the great ones.
Sincerely,

We are so sorry for your loss. Mr. Miner was as inspiration to our children in high school. Every year when the fair started they couldn't wait for him to come into class to let them know where all the good food was. But he also was a great teacher to all his students.

It is with sorrow and sadness, that Sharon and I learned of the passing of Marvin. Our memories and time shared during our time in Zillah will always bring a smile. Our thoughts and prayers are with family members during these difficult times. It was a rewarding time that we were able to spend as families, educators and friends. It always seems to end way too soon, but we all know a strong faith and belief in God is what directs our path ahead.

You've lost a Great husband, father, and Grandpa and we've lost a great teacher and leader.... Joyce "Billbe " Adkins Class of 1973 Never forgot the Driver's Ed either, and our trip to Seattle, What man in his right mind would take off to Seattle with 4 giggling girls, that thought they could drive. But it was great and we still laugh about those days........
Sherie and children. I want to send my heart felt condolences to you all. Marvin was a great friend to me and I will never forget the many many hours spent with him on church activities. He had a great sense of humor, was one of the smartest men I knew, and was a pleasure to be with. He made my life richer.
Take care. Lynn Hatcher
We love you all
I just saw that Marvin had passed away. He was one of my favorite teachers. He always went out of his way to help me understand algebra (which I hated.) He was a friend to everyone. He was always friendly, personal and such a great person. The last many years I always enjoyed seeing him at our opening day meetings in YSD as he was there with the insurance company he worked for. He was an exceptional person and teacher. I know my parents thought the world of him also. I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Karen Crosby Lange
