Janet Elaine (Henderson) Lake

Janet was born in Pasco, WA on July 3, 1931. Janet’s parents were J.W. (Wes) and Leila (Babe) Henderson. She grew up in Yakima, WA and attended Jefferson Grade School, Washington Jr. High and Yakima High School, graduating in the Class of 1949. Janet married Vernon Lake on January 27,1951 during one of the worst snowstorms ever in the Yakima Valley. They started their married life in a little house built for them with love by her Dad. Soon after they moved to their orchard on Pleasant Hill in Selah. Her daughter Sheryl was born in 1952, followed by Rod in 1955 and Don in 1956. In 1964 they sold their orchard and moved into town. While Janet was still in High School she worked for her aunt and uncle, Anne and Henry Stotsenberg’s at their car lot and continued a few years after her marriage. Over the years Janet worked at Selah Coffee Shop, Selah Auto Repair, Selah Variety Store, Mead’s, Mark-it Food’s, and Red Apple Grocery Store. Janet worked in the same building at Viking Village for over 25 years as a grocery checker and friend to everyone she waited on. Vern and Janet we very active in the Selah community as member of the J.C.’s making many friendships that lasted her entire life. They loved to travel in their pick-up and trailer with Vern’s sister and husband Ron and Carolyn Haworth. Lake Easton Resort was their meeting point. Janet’s husband Vern passed away in 1991. Soon after Janet retired from the grocery store but went to live and work with her daughter Sheryl at her child care and became “Grandma Janet” to all who entered. Over the last 20 years every summer was spent at Easton with Grandma Janet in the trailer, memories her grandchildren will never forget. Janet has been a resident at Selah Convalescent for the last 2 months. Janet is preceded in death by her husband Vernon Lake, parent J.W. (Wes) and Leila (Babe) Henderson , her in-laws C.S. (Sig) and Alma Lake and infant great-grandson Wyatt Manholand Janet is survived by her daughter Sheryl Gray of Selah, sons Rod (Cathy) Lake of Kennewick and Don (Cindy) Lake of Pacific Beach ,WA. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren Chris (Heidi) Knox, Lisa (Doug) Raap, Shaun (Becky) Knox, Scott (Launa) Gray, Stephanie Gray, Tyler (Nicole) Lake, Cory Lake, Kevin Lake , Ken (June) Lake, Christina (Douye) Tambou and Joey (Natalee) Manholand. 16 great grandchildren Janet is also survived by her sister-inlaw and brother-in-law Ron and Carolyn Haworth an niece and nephew Eunice and Ronald Haworth of Samamish,WA, an Aunt Anne Stotsenberg of Seattle, WA, an Uncle Bryce Carlson of Pasco, WA & several cousins. We wish to thank all the staff at Selah Convalescent, Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Room Dr. and nurses, Memorial’s Hospitalists, nurses and Hospice staff for Mom’s wonderful care. A Memorial Service will be at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Terrace Heights Thursday Nov. 17, 2011 at 1:00pm followed by a celebration of Janet’s Life and potluck at the Selah Civic Center. Dear Sheryl, Ron and Don, Iam so very sorry for the lost of your mom. I remember working with her at Meads Thirtfway in Selah in the early 70's.
