Lew Judd Allsop
Lew Judd Allsop, 85, of Zillah died Monday, November 16 in Yakima. Mr. Allsop was born in Lewiston, Utah, and served in the Navy during World War II. He worked as a civil engineer for the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Survivors include his wife, Kathryn Allsop of Zillah; two sons, Dee Allsop of Herndon, Va., and Lew Allsop of South Jordan, Utah; four daughters, Maurine Richards of Billings, Mont., Sharon Allsop-Day of Alpine, Utah, Myra Creviston of Moses Lake, Wash., and Joyce Rowley of Basin City, Wash.; two sisters, Afton Godfrey of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and LuDean Cowley of Smithfield, UtaLew Judd Allsop, one of the noble and great ones, died Monday, November 16, 2009 at Yakima Memorial Hospital in Yakima, Washington from
complications of a stroke. Judd was born on October 24, 1924 in Smithfield, Utah. He was raised on a farm in Trenton, Utah, establishing a work ethic and values that prevailed throughout his life. Judd’s priorities in life were work and education, family and church.

He graduated from high school and then served in the Navy Air Corp during World War II. He was married for time and all eternity to his beloved Kathryn Wight on Dec. 19, 1949. He graduated from Utah State University in 1952 with a degree in Civil Engineering and began a 30 year career working for the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs. He enjoyed the challenges of that career as much as he loved the people with whom he worked. After Judd retired from his civil engineering career, he returned to his farming roots and bought an orchard in Zillah, Washington. He loved working the
land and sharing the harvest with family and friends.

His life was as productive as his orchards and gardens. Judd’s was a life of service to his church. He served three missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, one in his youth to the southwestern states. His served three years with his wife as a mission president in Concepcion, Chile and later served in Hawaii at the Polynesian Cultural Center. He served in many church positions including Scoutmaster, Bishop, Stake President, High Councilor, Stake Missionary, Seminary Teacher, Youth Leader and Home Teacher. He worked extensively in the Genealogy and Family History programs, a passion that he shared with his wife, Kathryn. His faith was reflected in his life of service, kindness and love for everyone he encountered.

Nothing brought Judd greater joy than being surrounded by his loved ones. Grandmaand Grandpa Allsop’s house was the center of every gathering. Judd’s example has shaped the lives of every one of his 8 children, 46 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren.

He was the eldest of seven children and is survived by his two brothers, Sid Allsop and Richard Allsop and two sisters, Afton Godfrey and LuDean Cowley. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Ruth Keller and his son, Garth Allsop. His children, Maurine Richards, Sharron Allsop-Day, Myra Creviston, Dee Allsop, Joyce Rowley and Lew Allsop, will continue to cherish, as Judd did, his wife and their mother, Kathryn Wight Allsop.

Dear Sister Allsop and Family,

Although we have not met, your influence and legacy here in Chile prompts me to both extend my condolences as well as gratitude for your service here in Chile 20 years ago. What you accomplished here helped to lay the foundation for what now exists in Concepción with 7 stakes and 2 districts and now a new temple. Thank you for your service, faithfulness and exemplary lives.

I send my condolences to to the Allsop family. I knew President and Hermana Allsop when I was in the Chile Concepcion Mission from July 1990 to July 1992. President Allsop served others. He loved others. He cared for others. He is a spiritual giant. I am glad I had the opportunity and blessing to work under him in the great nation of Chile. He has left a great legacy, and that is not just in the USA, but also in South America. I love President and Sister Allsop. I will always remember President Allsop. May Sister Allsop and her family be comforted and blessed during this difficult time.
Love, Elder William E. Stebbing
Dear Sister Allsop,

Just today I read with sadness of President Allsop’s passing. I pray that you and your family will be comforted during this difficult time and the separation from your husband that it brings.

I served in the Chile-Concepción Mission from 1988 to 1990 and was President Allsop’s secretary for 10 months, not long after you first arrived. I still treasure the service I was able to give as a missionary in Chile and the happy experience of working with you, President Allsop, and the other Elders in the office. I returned to Chile for a few months after my mission as part of a BYU Study Abroad program and was able to visit you and President Allsop again. I think I was having some dating struggles at the time, and you and President Allsop told me some of your own experiences when you were younger and first courted each other after your missions in Arizona.

Since leaving the mission, I finished a few different degrees, including a Ph.D. in Political Science, and I now teach at BYU. I specialize in Latin American politics, a choice motivated partly by my mission experience. While I was working on my Ph.D. I finally I met my wife, Eliza Tanner, and we now have three small children: Andrew (age 5), Edward (3), and Lucy (1). They bring us great joy and occasional trials. We currently live in Provo and enjoy the opportunity of being so close to many good members of the Church.

Con mucho afecto,

I meet Brother Allsop when i started my missionary service in Concepcion, Chile. He was my Mission President only for two months but he let an eternal mark on my life, he encouraged me to learn English. That is why i can write this note, because i am chilean and native spanish speaker but his counsel opened to me a new entire world of knowledge, specially the knowledge of the doctrine of the church by reading books that are not avaliable in spanish. During my mission i read four times the book of mormon in english and today i still keep the copies of the scriptures in english that Sister and Brother Allsop gave me at the beginig of my mission.

To Sister Allsop, her sons and daugthers, i send all my love in this special time in your lives.
